Course Overview


This course will allow learners to develop the theoretical and practical knowledge in all aspects of work carried out as a dental technician. Learners will study the theoretical and practical techniques of the fabrication of dental appliances in:

  • Prosthetics - full and partial dentures
  • Fixed Prosthodontics - crowns and bridges
  • Orthodontics - alignment and straightening of teeth using various appliances

Learners will also study the associated areas of dental anatomy; dental biomaterial science; medical emergencies and first aid; legislation, professionalism and ethics.

Assessment and verification

Assessment for the BTEC qualification is based on the achievement of specified learning outcomes. A grade is awarded at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. Written and practical elements assess:

  • Development of practical and technical skills
  • Personal development for occupational roles
  • Application of generic skills

Progression

After completing the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Technology, learners may choose various pathways to continue professional development. Registration with the General Dental Council is essential in order to practice as a Dental Technician in the UK. Learners may progress into Higher Education; there are several institutions in the UK delivering the BSc (Hons) in Dental Technology.

Entry Requirements

  • 3 GCSEs/CXCs including Science, English Language and maths or
  • A relevant Level 2 vocational qualification plus English Language and Maths at GCSE/CXC
  • You must be in employment or actively seeking employment in a Dental Laboratory
  • Must be in good physical and mental health for the protection of patients.


Job Opportunities in order of Progression

Dental technologists are in high demand in the United States and Canada. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of dental technologists will grow 12% from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth is due to the aging population, which is more likely to need dental care, and the increasing demand for cosmetic dentistry.
